Practical learning of the Offshore licence theory

In our offshore licence courses, we teach you the theoretical knowledge of terrestrial navigation and all other topics required for the official examination in a clear and practical way. Our course instructors bring their personal experience from countless nautical miles travelled in waters around the globe to the table and thus ensure exciting and instructive lessons.

Theory courses to obtain the offshore licence to operate sailing and motor yachts at sea (live courses)

Our offshore licence theory course is based on the book "Seemannschaft", which will later serve as a valuable reference work. You will be optimally prepared for the official examination by means of PowerPoint presentations and practical tasks. The courses include the following topics:

  • Basics of terrestrial navigation: Use of nautical charts, chart equipment and converting and transferring courses.
  • Wind and current: Determining the loading for wind and current. When and how to take these elements into account.
  • Location determination: Terrestrial location determination using double bearings, cross bearings, radar bearings and GPS navigation.
  • Tides: Determination of jump, mean and neap time. How to determine the height of the tide (tide time).
  • Seamanship/Law of the Sea: Safety equipment for an ocean-going yacht, details of seamanship, knowledge of the Collision Prevention Regulations (CPR) in relation to sailing an ocean-going yacht.
  • Tips and tricks for the successful operation of an ocean-going yacht.

Weekend courses

As an alternative to the evening courses, you can choose between Saturday and Sunday courses if you are unable to attend a course in the evening or prefer this day. On 6 Saturdays or 6 Sundays of 5 hours each, you will be taught the same course material as on the evening courses. Even with the weekend courses, you can expect to spend 1 to 3 hours a week learning at home.

Intensive courses

The intensive courses are aimed at people who have previous knowledge or people who like to learn "quickly" - provided they have a good grasp of the material. The course material is taught in just one week, whereby you will receive some theory material for pre-study before the course. The course includes a mock examination so that you can check your level of training at the end of the course.

Exam

You generally take the theory exam at the SYA (Swiss Yachting Association), an examination centre recognised by the Swiss Maritime Navigation Office. There are 3.5 hours of examination time available for the chart tasks. After a one-hour lunch break, you have another 3.5 hours for the tidal tasks and for the multiple-choice questions on navigation, ship handling, seamanship, meteorology, maritime law and medicine on board. The examination is deemed to have been passed if at least 75 per cent of the maximum number of points is achieved in each examination subject.

Private offshore licence course

If you are a group of two or more people, we will be happy to organise a private offshore licence course for you: for example, on several evenings or weekends at your home, during 7 to 10 days in your holiday home or during two weeks on an offshore yacht, where you can put what you have learned into practice during the daily trips. Just get in touch with us contact us.

Offshore licence questionnaire as e-learning

As part of the offshore licence course documents, you will receive a licence card with an access code for the SYA (Swiss Yachting Association) e-learning course. This contains all the official theory questions as well as exam-like chart and tidal tasks. This allows you to learn anywhere and without restrictions on your computer, tablet and smartphone. With the intelligent exam simulation, you can also prepare efficiently for the offshore licence exam.
