Convenient online to The offshore licence theory

Learn and practise from the comfort of your own home until you are ready for the exam: in our live streaming courses, we teach you exactly the same knowledge of offshore licence theory as in our tried-and-tested classroom courses. Our instructors will guide you through the topics of terrestrial navigation in a practical way, practise live chart exercises with you and prepare you specifically for the official exam.

Online theory courses to obtain the offshore licence to operate sailing and motor yachts at sea

Our offshore licence online courses are conducted via the online application "ClickMeeting" as a livestream (online classroom courses, no self-study). The courses are based on the book "Seamanship", which will later serve you as a valuable reference work. The number of participants per course is limited to 10 so that there is enough time to cater to the individual needs of each participant. You will receive the course documents from us by post before the course starts.

The courses include the following topics:

  • Basics of terrestrial navigation: use of nautical charts, chart equipment and converting and transmitting courses.
  • Wind and current: Determining the feed for wind and current. When and how to take these elements into account.
  • Positioning: Terrestrial positioning using double bearings, cross bearings, radar bearings and GPS navigation.
  • Tides: Determination of spring, mean and neap tides. How to determine the height of the tide (tide time).
  • Seamanship/maritime law: safety equipment for an ocean-going yacht, details of seamanship, knowledge of the Collision Prevention Rules (CPR) in relation to sailing an ocean-going yacht.
  • Tips and tricks for successfully sailing an ocean-going yacht.

Evening courses

In 10 evening lessons of 2.5 hours each, you will learn the basics of terrestrial navigation. The courses start at 7.00 pm so that you can take part comfortably and without time pressure after your working day. You should expect to spend an additional 1 to 3 hours per week learning.
We have organised the course evenings for participants from three regions (north-west, central and eastern Switzerland) so that graduates have the opportunity to meet and exchange ideas in learning groups.

Weekend courses

As an alternative to the evening courses, you can choose between Saturday and Sunday courses. On 6 Saturdays or 6 Sundays of 5 hours each, you will be taught the same course material as on the evening courses. For the weekend courses, you can also expect to spend an additional 1 to 3 hours a week learning.

Intensive courses

The intensive courses are aimed at people with previous knowledge or people who like to learn "quickly" - assuming they have a good grasp of the material. The course material is taught over 5 consecutive days.

Mock exam

All courses are concluded with a mock exam in a course location. You will then have the opportunity to discuss any open questions and uncertainties with your course instructor on site. The mock examination takes place on a Saturday. You have a total of 7 hours to complete the tasks – just like the official exam.

Exam

You usually take the official theory exam at the SYA (Swiss Yachting Association), an examination centre recognised by the Swiss Maritime Navigation Office. There are 3.5 hours of examination time available for the chart tasks. After a one-hour lunch break, you have another 3.5 hours for the tidal tasks and for the multiple-choice questions on navigation, ship handling, seamanship, meteorology, maritime law and medicine on board. The examination is deemed to have been passed if at least 75 per cent of the maximum number of points is achieved in each examination subject.

Offshore licence questionnaire as e-learning

As part of the offshore licence course documents, you will receive a licence card with an access code for the SYA (Swiss Yachting Association) e-learning course. This contains all the official theory questions as well as exam-like chart and tidal tasks. This allows you to learn anywhere and without restrictions on your computer, tablet and smartphone. With the intelligent exam simulation, you can also prepare efficiently for the offshore licence exam.
